With reference to my latter of 28 June 1897 I

am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to transmit to you herewith, for the information of Mr Secretary Chamberlain,a copy of a letter of the 7th instant which They have received from the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China relative to the further

allocation of their note issue.

Their Lordships concur in the arrangements pro- posed therein: and They desire me to request that you will move Mr Secretary Chamberlain, should he see no objection, to cause instructions to be conveyed by telegraph (at the expense of the Bank) to the Colonial Treasurer at HongKong for the receipt of the proposed deposit of $83,334 in cash, representing one-third of the increase in the HongKong issue.
